A High School student is in trouble, after allegedly drowning her 3-day-old infant in River Migori.
Witnesses say the child died after being thrown into the river, and the body discovered along the banks of the river.
According to neighbors, the girl had initially claimed that she had taken the new born to the father.
The 17-year-old Radienya secondary school student has since been arrested, and is being held by police. She is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
The incident was confirmed by Oruba Ragana Chief John Okombo.
“She will be arraigned in court on Monday alongside other suspects. Police are carrying out further investigations,” said the Chief.
The girl allegedly decided to drown the child in the river, after the man who impregnated her allegedly rejected the child.
The man is alleged to be a boda boda operator, and has since gone into hiding.
The student is expected to join form four next year.
The incident comes as various stake holders in the education sector look into ways of reducing cases of early pregnancies among school going girls.
This is after a section of standard 8 and form four candidates sat for KCPE and KCSE exams while pregnant or did their exams in hospitals after giving birth this month.
