Kenyan athletic legend Kipchoge Keino and former Sports CS Hassan Wario have surrendered to the police, in regard to a scandal at the Ministry of Sports.

The two surrendered to the police, and before the Thursday deadline, after they were summoned to appear for charges on alleged involvement in embezzlement of funds meant for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The Anti-Corruption Court had on Monday given the two, together with two other officials until today, Thursday to appear before Magistrate Douglas Ogoti, to answer to the charges. 

The officials were supposed to appear before the court on Monday, but Keino and Wario were said to be out of the country then and were expected to be in the country by Wednesday. 

“Failure to present themselves before the DCI, warrants of arrests be issued,” directed Ogoti on Monday.

Also expected to answer to the graft charges are the former director of administration Haron Chebet Komen and ex-finance officer in the Sports ministry Patrick Kimithi Nkabu.

The officials are accused of embezzling millions of shillings meant for preparation of the 2016 games.

the government is said to have released Sh544 million, of which Sh55 million is said to have been misused/embezzled. 

"Accordingly, I have directed the DCI to immediately have the persons arraigned in court. They are hereby directed to report before the DCI headquarters on or before October 15. 2018, failure to which the process of obtaining warrants of arrest shall commence before a competent court," stated the DPP when he issued the directive.
