Malindi GK Prison senior superintendent Jilo Komora is appealing to the Kilifi county government and well-wishers to help the rehabilitation facility in reducing congestion of inmates.
Speaking on Thursday at the Malindi GK Prison where prison warders and other stakeholders joined female inmates to celebrate the welcoming of the International Women’s Day, Komora said that 798 inmates instead of 400 inmates are currently occupying the the facility.
Komora said, “even though the government is trying its best, we still have shortage of wards. We are appealing to anyone, especially the county government of Kilifi to chip in and help us deal with this congestion issue. The county government cannot forsake the inmates because they belong to Kilifi county."
Speaking at the same event, Josephine Mutuku, the women prison officer in charge, said the prison’s effort to equip the inmates with marketable modern skills is being challenged by lack of modern facilities such as the salon facilities at the prison.
“We want modern machines to prepare our ladies in prison with what is happening out there so that once they are out there, they will easily cope up and earn a living for their families,” she said.
Mutuku also appealed to well-wishers to help the prison to install a daycare centre to help the kids who accompany their mothers in prison.
