Speaking in Makutano on Tuesday, Gitonga noted that there is a sand harvesting ban in the sub-county, adding that locals should adhere it.

He said that some locals pretend to harvest sand for their domestic use, only to collect and sell it at night.

"They are pretending to harvest sand for their own use, they put it in tractors and ox-carts, and wait during dusk to sell to lorries,"said Gitonga.

He said the areas affected by the vice include; Vyulya, Masii, and some areas bordering river Thwake.

He warned that if residents continue with the vice, no one will be allowed to harvest sand even for domestic use.

"Those using the window we have opened for sand harvesting for the purpose of domestic use to sell secretly, will force us to impose a total ban on it, there will be no more harvesting," he said.

He urged residents to recall how sand harvesting business had greatly affected the environment, and education of their kids.
