Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday, award-winning teacher Peter Tabichi kissed the ground leaving many people who'd come to usher him in wondering.
The Franciscan brother who teaches Maths and Physics at Keriko Secondary School in Nakuru won Sh100 million, becoming the first African to win Global Teacher award in Dubai on Sunday.
At Egesa FM during an interview, Tabichi, who hails from Kemera ward in Kitutu Masaba, said his decision to kiss the ground was guided by the sense of patriotism.
"I am a proud African and a Kenyan…that is one way of showing patriotism. We really respect our motherland so I was so happy that where I come from has made me rise to where I am," he said.
Tabichi added:"I was also overwhelmed to see several people who had come to pick me up from the Airport. It was least expected. It was such nostalgic return and I thank God."
He beat nine other finalists to bag the prize and he insisted that he least expected the honour. At Dubai, he was accompanied by his father, Lawrence Tabichi and youths minister Amina Mohammed.
Mr Tabichi will return to Keriko Secondary School on Saturday after which he would attend a mega homecoming ceremony at his Riombati village in Nyamira according to Kemera MCA George Morara.
