Garissa County government on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the national government on gender-based violence.
In a function presided over by the County First Lady Fardosa Osman at Garissa Child Protection Unit, the two levels of governments vowed to work together to eradicate all forms of violence meted on girls and minors across the county. Speaking during the event, Fardosa thanked the efforts made by the local security agencies in combating gender-based offences.
"Gender-based violence is a thorn in the flesh and must be eradicated by all means. I want to thank the police for their continued support in protecting the vulnerable groups," Fardosa revealed.
Garissa has in the recent past witnessed several cases of gender-based violence with the leading form being rape.
In a span of a month, two rape cases have been reported to have been perpetrated on minors by the elderly, good enough to be their fathers.
Another form of violence that is gradually developing in the region is domestic violence where women are subjected to battery at the hands of their husbands.
This, however, is least reported to the relevant authorities.
