The 6 pm incident at Kamere, a market centre in Naivasha, stunned onlookers after the driver of a Saloon car abandoned it by the side of the road and disappeared.

Police are still in hot pursuit of the driver. The registration number of the grey car is KBB 507F and appeared to be in good condition after the incident.

"He was extremely drunk. He was driving recklessly and even missed a lady by a whisker before hitting the man (victim) who was waiting to cross the road. He immediately got out of the car and staggered away," said one of the witnesses who was at the scene at the time the man was hit.

The gathering crowd could not immediately establish what had transpired and this gave the rogue driver a chance to escape.

Two police officers arrived at the scene just in time to prevent an angry mob from setting the abandoned car on fire.

The evening rush hour at the relatively under-developed Kamere market has made it hard for the smooth flow of traffic given the narrow road passing nearby to Oloserian.

It remains to be seen what happens with the rogue driver given the police have the car that caused the accident.
