Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has not publicly declared that he would be in the presidential race in the coming general elections.
However, his political moves and words confirm that he is eying the country’s top seat.
Deputy President William Ruto who will also be in the race is Senator Moi's main competitor and political rival and the two have been fighting for the support of Mt Kenya and the control of Rift Valley region.
On Friday, the KANU chairman hosted a group of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from Tharaka Nithi county at a popular hotel in Nairobi.
The twelve Ward Representatives from Jubilee, Narc-Kenya and Independent parties pledged their support to the Baringo Senator ahead of his quest to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking on behalf of MCAs, Tharaka Nithi county assembly minority leader Nyaga Muthambi said, “We met with Gideon Moi because we have decided that he will be our presidential flag bearer in 2022.”
It is important to note that only three MCAs from the county failed to attend the meeting. Tharaka Nithi is a Jubilee party stronghold and has over 200,000 registered voters.
DP Ruto expects the back up of this region in 2022 after supporting Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017. If these MCAs are able to convince their supporters and back Senator Moi, then it will be a big blow to the DP's presidential ambitions.
