Nakuru town, though bragging about its own share of a wealthy population, it has a larger number of low-income earners.

Most of these have consequently ended up in poor housing structures across the town.

One place where the downtrodden, while away their sorrows is Mabao slum in Kivumbini Ward, Nakuru East constituency.

Here are some of the weird characteristics of this little ghetto

1. Sits on a sewer line

The slum is built on top of a major sewer line linking most parts of the eastern end of the lakeside town to the southern-end sewage.

Therefore, it is existing contrary to the directives of both the Nakuru county government and the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Company (NAWASSCO) which mans the line.

2. Very narrow

Despite stretching for close to 700 metres from the upper Lake Road, the estate which is sandwiched between Kivu Resort and Pyrethrum estate is very narrow.

This is because it is built on a reserve land which has been left unoccupied as a result of the sewer line running beneath it.

3. All houses are wooden

Most of the houses in this strip of an estate are wooden, hence the name 'Mabao' (woods), with the remaining made of iron shoots and mud.

This is partly due to its temporary nature, as it risks being brought down by the relevant authorities at any time.

4. The cheapest

Judging by the poor state of its structures, one can be sure to get a room for as low as Sh500 a month.

Due to its illegal nature, there is no water connection.
