Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni has opposed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
According to the lawmaker, the task force created by President Uhuru Kenyatta in collaboration with ODM Leader Raila Amolo Odinga is unconstitutional.
Kioni reiterated that although the team was created through a gazette notice, it is not part of the constitutional plan. He noted that the formation of the team lacked a legal framework as well as backing.
Kioni said that implementation of the recommendations of the report will face endless hurdles because of the same. Kioni, who is also the chairman of the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC), said that the matter should be revisited to make it constitutional before implementation can be undertaken.
“We could have a polarising period which could have been avoided using a parliamentary committee,” said the lawmaker, as quoted by Daily Nation.
He also cautioned Kenyans against pushing for a change in the constitution before 2022. He noted that the changes in the current constitution will come with effects that Kenyans must be ready to face in the long run.
“I am cautioning Kenyans that are trying to amend the constitution, even when starting a popular initiative, outside representatives of the people (Parliament) is most likely going to fail. BBI recommendations stand a chance if routed through Parliament,” said Kioni, as quoted by Daily Nation.
