President Uhuru Kenyatta Wednesday called for the review of the delocalisation policy that has been the subject of great controversy.
Teachers set to be sent to Northeastern against their will can now breathe a sigh of relief after Uhuru's intervention.
He contended that the policy was having a detrimental effect on teachers' families and had to be looked into with fresh eyes.
"I am aware that the ongoing delocalization programme has created unforeseen challenges that have, in some instances, affected teachers families. We are reviewing the policy guidelines to ensure that this policy is not implemented to the detriment of families," the president said.
Teachers sent to Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and other hardship counties where security is an issue under the delocalisation programme have been up in arms.
Quite a number had opted to resign than agree to be taken to these counties.
"I am very happy that the president has weighed in on the matter. I was to work in Garissa but I was not comfortable because of domestic and security issues," a teacher, weighing in on the matter on condition of anonymity says.
The controversial delocalisation policy was aimed at ensuring that teachers do not work in areas where they are natives.
