According to Haji, there are high cases of gender violence perpetrated against women and young girls in the Coast region.

The team involves investigators, prosecutors and human rights, groups.

"The special team will hunt down perpetrators of gender violence against women," Haji said at Mkunguni square in Lamu on Thursday.

He said the team will also provide counselling to victims and their families.

Haji assured the victims that justice will be served but asked them to come out and give details of their cases.

Human rights activists from Haki Africa Group and MUHURI argue that cases of girls being sexually assaulted in Lamu are alarming.

The activists further allege that police in Lamu are not well trained and equipped to handle gender violence cases.

They argue that male police officers allegedly examine sexually assaulted women and girls.

On his part, Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i said rescue centres will be established across Lamu to help victims get treatment and justice.

The CS also said that trained police officers to specifically handle gender-related cases will be deployed to Lamu.

The CS is part of the top government officials engaging Lamu residents in dialogue termed "All for Justice".

The long service week started on Monday and ends on Saturday.
