An elected MP from the Gusii community has revealed that he does not need a bodyguard to protect him while discharging his duties.
Speaking on Saturday at Nyakoe, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka said there is no way he can be protected yet many people in deep villages are insecure.
He said areas prone to insecurity should have more police officers deployed to offer security instead of protecting an individual.
“No one will harm me because of being an MP. Therefore, I don’t need a bodyguard to protect me. I want my people and other Kenyans in deep villages to be protected instead,” he said.
According to Onyonka, for the last one year, he has never had a bodyguard.
He wondered why a section of politicians whose security officers were recently withdrawn could be scared.
The lawmaker insisted the need for the government to protect people in villages more than protecting a few individuals and challenged the elected leaders to champion for the safety of electorates.
“We want to see more police officers beefing security across all corners of this country and not walking around with politicians. The electorates should be secure at all times,” he added.
