Angry residents in Riamoni village, Kitutu Masaba, Nyamira County on Wednesday publicly flogged a woman who insulted her mother-in-law.
Brenda Kerubo was accused of disrespecting her mother-in-law Esther Nyambeki.
Nyumba Kumi Chairman Stanley Momanyi who led locals in punishing the woman said Kerubo, a mother of three returned to the village two months ago from Nairobi where she has been living with her husband.
"Kerubo was not happy after her mother-in-law asked her son to send her to the village to take care of the cows and their farm. On Wednesday morning they had a quarrel and Kerubo publicly called Esther a prostitute," said Momanyi.
Mr Momanyi said Esther reported the matter to Nyumba Kumi officials.
"Upon questioning Kerubo she admitted that she indeed insulted her mother-in-law claiming that it was out of anger. Locals agreed that we should cane her in public to serve as an example to other women fond of abusing their parents-in-law," he noted.
Area chief Kennedy Ndege criticised the woman's actions saying that such behaviour won't be condoned in the area.
"Men when marrying ensure you ask your wives to respect your parents for the sake of peaceful coexistence," said the chief.
