There were mixed reactions at Lela market in Maseno after a 15-year-old boy was on Monday arrested for allegedly stealing from his uncle's shop to pay for his orphaned cousin's secondary school fees.
The unschooling boy identified as Grainnie is said to have been picking at least Shs 500 every day for the last four years.
Grainnie who was helping his uncle at his shop is revealed to have paid fees for his orphaned cousin John who was schooling at Chulaimbo Secondary until completion in 2018.
The uncle is said to have been tipped off by the Grainnie's maternal grandfather said that he realized that his nephew had been paying his cousin’s secondary school fees using his shop sales.
“The grandfather to the boy called me on Saturday saying that my money has been paying school fees for his grandchild. I thought I was helping him. I want to find out whether his aunt is aware of this,” Titus, the shopkeeper narrated.
The grandfather is said to have spilled the beans after reportedly falling out with Grannie's mother who was staying with John at her home.
Grainnie confirmed the charges on Monday morning after being apprehended before the Maseno police and insisted that his mother was not involved.
“My mother supported him. I paid for the rest. My mother knew that John had a sponsor. I told him to lie. My grandfather knows too,” he admitted.
Maseno OCS K Langat said that both the mother and grandfather to the boy will be subject to questioning in the ongoing investigations.
It remains unclear on who will be charged and how the guardians will go over the matter.
