A journey of a thousand miles by the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, has come to an end. Boinnet has completed his tenure in office and is on the brink of leaving the office.

Boinnet has served in the IG position for four years, and because the office does not renew terms for holders, he has no otherwise but to call it quits.

We look at some of the major changes Boinnet brought about in the police force.

The following are some of the record changes Boinnet set:

1. New police uniforms

One of the changes in the police service included the introduction of new uniforms that sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans.

The deep blue uniforms were said to be friendlier to Kenyans, and that it could make police be easily recognised when delivering services to the people.

2. Life assurance cover for officers

Boinnet also introduced a life insurance cover for the police officers, for them to deliver services to the citizens without fear for their lives.

There was also the introduction of a medical cover for inpatient and out-patient services for officers themselves as well as their loved ones.

3. House allowances

For the first time in Kenya, police officers, including constables, were freely allowed to rent private houses away from police stations' units which were in a bad state.

Officers can use their allowances to stay in a place of their choice.
