There was drama Sunday evening at a roadblock along Namanga-Nairobi highway when two police units clashed.
According to reports by the Standard, two detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were escorting a lorry suspected to have contraband items to the DCI headquarters when they were ‘arrested’ by police officers manning a roadblock.
According to the reports, the police officers disarmed the detectives at gunpoint.
Drama ensued, as the two detectives’ guns were taken away.
“They disarmed the detectives and humiliated them even after they introduced themselves. They took away their guns and document,” an officer said.
The detectives’ bosses in Nairobi had to intervene and help their juniors.
According to sources privy to the incident, there is a growing mistrust between police officers and detectives from the DCI.
“The team will seek to establish whether there had been any communication between the teams that man the roadblock and the driver. This will enable the officers to know if their colleagues were involved in the smuggling of the product,” a senior police boss told the Standard.
The lorry is said to have been transporting contraband ethanol from Tanzania.
It was taken to the DCI headquarters as investigations continue.
