The rain which was witnessed for the better part of Tuesday night in Jarjara area of Balambala sub-county has left a number of families homeless. Through their local leadership, residents are now calling for humanitarian assistance to help them cope with the latest disaster.

Even as the calls continue, the Kenya Redcross society has already marshalled a team to the area to help the affected households.

Issuing a statement on their social media handle, the Kenya Redcross society revealed that several people had been marooned by floods and were in urgent need of assistance.

"Several people are reportedly marooned in Jarjara, Balambala Sub-county, Garissa following a heavy downpour. Red Cross response team is en route to the scene," the humanitarian agency posted on Twitter.

Just before the onset of the ongoing heavy rains, the entire North Eastern region had been grappling with acute food and water shortage.

The situation was so dire that regional governors called on the national government to declare the drought a national disaster.
