A suspect presented before an Eldoret Court on Tuesday stunned the court after the suspect thought to be a female athlete turned out to be a man.
The suspect who identified himself as Shieys Chepkosgei was arraigned in court to answer to charges of impersonating a female nurse identified as Pamela Mulupi.
The court heard that his real name was Hillary Kiprotich and was impersonating a female nurse at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on June 14.
Investigating officer Victor Omondi told the court they were informed by nurses at the facility who were suspicious of him and could not find a Pamela Mulupi on the interns' register.
The officers arrested the accused person who was working at the Emergency Section while dressed in the nurse’s uniform and also had a badge.
It was discovered that Chepkosgei was a man during a routine check at the Eldoret GK Women Prison where he was being remanded on Monday.
Officer Omondi told the court that the accused person has participated in marathons in Malaysia, Morocco, Tanzania and Zambia as a woman and has won three medals adding that all his identification documents which were presented in court identified him as a female.
The suspect who is yet to plead to any of the charges in court said he associates more with the female gender.
“I was identified as a male, but when I became an athlete, I registered myself as female,” said Kiprotich as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.
Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa directed that the accused person be remanded in police custody for 10 days.
Magistrate Obulutsa ordered that his birth certificate, identification card and passport be investigated and that he be taken to the MTRH to determine her gender.
The case will be mentioned on June 27.
