Residents of Rigena village, Kionduso in Kisii County are mourning the death of a 12-year-old girl who died after she drowned in a local dam.
A witness Mary Kerubo who was at the dam fetching water with the deceased, Ivon Kemunto, said when Ivon was trying to rescue the jerrycan she was using to fetch water after it was swept away with water when she drowned.
"Kemunto tried to grab the jerrycan when it was swept away with water in vain. She drowned in the water in the dam," she said.
Ms. Kerubo said her efforts to rescue the deceased didn't bear fruits and she had to scream for help.
"I screamed for help from members of the public who arrived only to find the minor dead and her body floating on water," she added.
The local chief Bernard Mosioma said the minor's body was retrieved from the dam and was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.
"Her body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue," said the chief.
Mr Mosioma urged parents to stop sending minors to fetch water from dams in the area to avert unnecessary deaths.
"Parents must take good care of their children and stop using them to fetch water from dangerous water sources," said Mosioma.
