Giants Gor Mahia were at their flawless best, tearing Yanga of Tanzania apart in a 4-0 crushing win in a Caf-Confederations Group ‘D’ tie played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Wednesday evening.
Ivorian Ephrem Guikan, wasteful in the recent assignment in the Cecafa Kagame Cup led the rout; scoring a brace while Jacques Tuyisenge and ensured K'ogalo record the comfortable victory.
Tuyisenge opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Guikan found the mark shortly before the break as Gor romped to a huge victory, the first for the Dylan Kerr coached charges in their Group’ D’ matches.
Despite missing injured first-team regulars Ernest Wendo, George Odhiambo and suspended Joash Onyango, Gor were too strong for the Tanzanians who now lie last in the group with just a point.
From three matches, Algeria’s USM Alger top the group with seven points, having beaten both Yanga and Rayon Sport of Rwanda, and drawing with Gor.
Tuyisenge's opener was an easy tap-in from a Francis Kahata cross before Guikan doubled the advantage just before the break, finishing off a well-sent through-pass, taking Gor to a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Upon resumption, Gor started with evident zeal to add the third but were slowed down by Tuyisenge’s injury, who limped off in the 53rd.
Consequently, head coach Kerr introduced new signing Francis Mustapha to lead the attack alongside Guikan. The Ivorian coordinated well with Mustapha just above the hour mark; a thread of passes between the pair ending up with a feeble shot by the latter, giving Yanga’s custodian Rostand Jehu little trouble to handle.
Philemon Otieno could not finish past Jehu in the 67th, after a goalmouth melee that saw the Tanzanian punch the ball twice, with reactions from Otieno and Guikan bearing no fruit.
