Irate members of the public on Monday torched a government vehicle after allegedly causing an accident in Trans Nzoia County.

According to an eye witness, the Land Cruiser vehicle hit a motorbike transporting three passengers at Kipkeimei Market along the Kitale-Kachibora Road.

The passengers, three women and a three-year-old child died on the spot.

Angry members of the public responded by burning the vehicle to ashes, said Abel Kibet who witnessed the incident.

According to the Standard, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the accident.

Residents also burnt a firearm belonging to a policeman who was also in the van.

The daily reports that the officer had to shoot in the air repeatedly to scare away the angry crowd but was later overpowered before being saved by Kenya police reservists.

This follows a recent survey by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) whose findings indicate that a total of 184 people have died on the roads since the beginning of 2019.

According to the survey, 72 of the victims were pedestrians. This comes months after the State introduced a crackdown on all passenger service vehicles to tame such instances.
