A woman from Geseneno is nursing injuries after her son-in-law attacked her when she demanded dowry on Sunday.
Raphael Otucho said his mother-in-law Stella Kemunto went to his home and demanded dowry, threatening that she would take her daughter away.
“I married her daughter only 3 years ago and she has been forcing me to pay dowry. I was angered with her rush to demand dowry and beat her thoroughly and kicked her out of the homestead,” said Otucho.
Otucho said he may end up divorcing his wife so that her mother can look for a man who will be ready to pay her dowry.
“I have plans now to send my wife away because I will not withstand the pressure from the so called mother-in-law over dowry payment,” he said.
Area chief, Benjamin Momanyi said Kemunto was rescued from the beating by neighbors.
“It is sad that Otucho beat his mother-in-law who went to demand dowry. He could have told her to wait until he gets money instead of beating her. I will ensure he pays for her medical expenses since he injured her on the face and hands,” he stated.
The chief, however, called on parents to stop putting pressure on men who have married their daughters to pay dowry.
