It is suspected the bhang had been sourced from Tanzania.

Makueni county commissioner Mohammed Maalim said the consignment was impounded from two vehicles on transit to Mombasa.

Maalim said the third suspect escaped arrest and was on the run.

He addressed the press in his office on Wednesday.

Maalim said both traffic and regular police officers in patrol along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway gave chase to one of the vehicles forcing the driver to abandon it at Ndiini in Taita Taveta County.

He said police acted on a tip off from members of the public that there were vehicles suspected to be transporting bhang through Migori and was headed to Mombasa.

“Our officers set a trap but the driver of the first vehicle defied orders to stop, instead he sped off forcing the officers to give chase but he abandoned the vehicle in Taita Taveta," Maalim said.

The driver of the second vehicle diverted to Wote when he reached Makindu after he realized that the vehicle was being trailed by police officers.

He was arrested at Kathonzweni with another occupant.

The two vehicles were impounded at Sultan Hamud Police Station.

The duo has been locked up at Makueni Police Station.

“We cannot allow people to make quick money by doing illegal business that is destructive to lives of Kenyans and the young generation. We are conducting an operation to weed out such people,” Maalim said.

Maalim said police had commenced investigations into the incident.

He said the suspects will be arraigned in court once the investigations were complete.
