Mount Kenya Rivers are facing abstraction of licenses due to the decline of downstream water in a bid to regulate the water resource.
The licenses shall be suspended for 14 days. Speaking in Kubaru Forest on Tuesday, Water and irrigation Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui said that license holders will have to reapply again.
He further accused the Kenya forest of allowing herders to graze and farming the forest, a move he stated is leading to low water volumes downstream.
“The government is now going to have a multi-agency approach that will involve different ministries to enforce the water regulation in the country even as steps to establish the volumes of water in the rivers commence,” he said.
Mr. chelugui directed that proper mechanisms be adhered to during issuing of the license.
The Cabinet Minister asked the Water resource authority to take action to ensure no more water is drained out of the river.
