Mrefu who had been declared ‘Nyeri’s most wanted man’ by the police was found murdered and his mutilated body stuffed into a sack and dumped at Karia Dam, outside Nyeri Town earlier in the month.

The commissions led by the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU) and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) now want the police force held responsible for Mrefu’s killing.

According to Muhuri, Githinji’s initial claims that the police were after his life is reason enough for investigations against the force.

“Githinji said police wanted him dead. He offered to present himself to the police to avoid possible elimination,” Muhuri's Francis Auma told the Nation on Saturday.

Githinji, also reportedly a reformed member of the outlawed Mungiki sect handed himself to the police on October 22, after reporting that he feared for his life.

A postmortem test on Monday revealed that the latter was killed by strangulation, both by hand and cord, with the test revealing that he might have been incapacitated at the time of the murder.

Muhuri has called for the intervention of the parliament to look into the increasing extrajudicial killing of suspected robbers and Mungiki members in Nyeri.

“There is a big problem in Nyeri and it is time for the parliamentary committee on security to step in and investigate these extrajudicial killings,” Muhuri chair Khelef Khalifa is quoted.

Githinji is set to be laid to rest on Saturday, December 8.
