Rita is former US President Barack Obama’s sister.
However, she is more than just being a sister to ex-US President.
There are many things that make her a greater person even without associating with Obama. Here are five things about Rita that you didn’t know:
1. CEORita Obama has her own non-profit organization, Sauti Kuu Foundation. She takes care of a lot of orphans and young Kenyans struggling with poverty. She is a community activist, a sociologist and a writer.
2. CareerBefore starting her own Sauti Kuu Foundation, she had worked for years at international charity organization, CARE International. She gained a lot of experience and motivation that made her start her own charity back in Kenya.
3. MarriageShe was married to a British man, Ian Manners in 1996. They sired one daughter, Akinyi in 1997. Rita and Ian divorced in 2000 before moving to Kenya with her daughter in 2007.
4. AuthorThroughout her writing career, she wrote “And Then Life Happens” which was released in 2012. She also has a German documentary film, “The Education of Auma Obama.”
5. Several honorsShe has been honored with several awards. In 2017, she received the fourth International TUV Rheinland Global Compact Award in Cologne.
