Statistics from clinics serving students at Moi University main campus have revealed that Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and other Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) like genital herpes are on the rise among the students.
Dr Wilson Seurey from Lelmolok clinic revealed during an exclusive interview with Hivisasa that contraction of UTIs is higher among the ladies as compared to their male counterparts.
“Ladies are the most vulnerable when it comes to contracting UTIs. This is due to the poor hygiene of the toilets at the hostels and also in their houses. What most ladies do not know is that they are supposed to flush the toilet before using them and not after,” Dr Seurey noted.
The doctor also advised the ladies to avoid wearing multiple or heavy underwears. In addition, they should air their underwear outside in a well aerated and sunny environment instead of in the bathroom.
UTI has also been established to have a close relationship with some of the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) chlamydia or trichomoniasis which according to the doctor have also become a major concern.
“Some of the STIs have also begun establishing worrying statistics because most of the students have begun ignoring the concept of safe sex especially those who are dating,” Dr Seurey stated.
He advised students to continue using protection during sex regardless of whether they are dating or not.
The doctor could not share the clinic's records due to patient-doctor confidentiality but confirmed that there was a significant increase in the number of people who were receiving treatment for UTIs and STIs.
