The two-time county boss, a former strong critic of Uhuru's Jubilee regime, was among several politicians who also received State commendation from the President as he led Kenya's 55th Jamhuri Day celebrations in Nairobi.

"On behalf of the people of Mombasa and my own behalf I wish to extend my gratitude to H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta for decorating me with a State Commendation of Elder of the Golden Heart (E.G.H)," said Joho, who aims to succeed Uhuru in the 2022 general elections.

"This honour is not just in recognition of my efforts but for the people of Mombasa and the Coast region at large," he added on Wednesday.

Meanwhile as he led the celebrations in Mombasa, Joho waived all medical bills for patients who were discharged on Jamhuri Day but were unable to settle their bills.

This has been a tradition for the governor since his first term in office.

"In keeping with our tradition of commemorating Jamhuri Day, I have waived all bills for patients in all our County Hospitals who have been discharged but are unable to settle their bills."

Joho further urged all Mombasa residents and the country at large to continue fostering harmonious relations, promoting cohesion and peaceful co-existence.
