Even as public rage continues over youths being neglected in key public appointments, former National Assembly deputy speaker and Garissa-based politician Farah Maalim has delved into the matter, revealing that some positions are reserved for the elderly.
Citing the case of the presidency, Maalim in a social media statement revealed that Kenyan youths will not produce a president any time soon because of the constitutional provision that considers any citizen below the age of 35 as being too young to lead a country.
In the same statement, Maalim defended President Kenyatta's appointment of Uncle Moody Awori as a board member of the Sports and Social Fund saying he is healthy and sharp at 91 years.
"Age is but a number. In the bill of rights in our constitution, one cannot be discriminated on account of advanced age. You can only be denied an opportunity to serve in a certain position because you are too young. You can't run for Presidency if below 35. Moody is healthy & sharp," Maalim stated.
The politicians' statement might not get well with a section of Kenyan youths who form the majority of those going without employment despite having the necessary qualifications.
