More than 250 families from Kwa Chocha, in Malindi town who were displaced following the expansion of the Malindi International Airport, have given the government a seven-day notice to compensate them or they storm the facility and block aeroplane activities.
According to the residents, the government has delayed in compensating those who were affected by the expansion, despite visiting all the government offices required, including Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) in Malindi and Nairobi.
Addressing the press at Kwa Chocha on Sunday led by their spokesperson Ali Midhora, they said "we are tired of hide and seek games. If the government will not honor our call in seven days, we will lead our families to the airport and lie on the runways to ensure no aircraft takes off or lands.”
According to Midhora, a total of Sh630 million is supposed to be paid to the second group of the displaced families after the first group, 105 families, was compensated Sh300 million.
Patience Muchombo, the chairperson to the association that fights for the rights of the displaced families, told the press that 32 families which were awarded Sh124 million on 9th and 10th of October, 2017 are yet to receive the funds.
Muchombo added, “we were assured that funds for 32 families are ready and money had been disbursed to the National Lands Commission account and that in two weeks the families would have received their share. One year down the line, nothing has happened to date, we are tired.”
