Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has refuted reports by sections of the media that a newborn baby has disappeared from Machakos Level 5 hospital.
Governor Mutua says the baby did not disappear but died moments after it was born.
According to Mutua, a 17-year-old woman went to Machakos Level Five Hospital on Wednesday in labour at 46 weeks gestation.
The governor notes that she was scheduled for an emergency caesarean section due to poor progress and 'meconium staining grade 3'.
"The C/S was done under spinal anaesthesia (mother awake). Life male infant was extracted with a birth weight of 3.4 kg with severe birth asphyxia." Mutua said in a statement on Friday.
Governor Mutua in the statement says that the infant died while undergoing management.
According to Mutua as per procedures, a hospital team is currently seated to review what caused the infant's death and make recommendations.
The governor also says he has directed that DNA samples be taken from the deceased's infant and its mother to fully establish if the baby belonged to her.
Mutua says Machakos government hospitals and health centres are committed to providing quality services to residents.
