Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has challenged women to contest for higher elective positisions in the upcoming 2022 general election.
Ngilu wants women to abandon small seats and go for big seats to get opportunity to make decisons that will touch on the lives of Kenyans.
Speaking during the launch of 'The Journeys of Top Achieving Women in Kenya' at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi on Friday, Ngilu said the constitution has empowered women to vie for big political elective seats.
Ngilu indicated that women will get a chance to push for their interests only if they are in leadership.
The first term governor said that leadership is no longer a preserve for men.
"As women we must stand up and contest for top seats that will give us a voice on providing solutions to national issues," she said.
Ngilu challenged women to form a liberation movement that will agitate for their rights and empower those at the grass root levels to leadership.
She said that the country needs women voices to solve some of the challenges like poverty and corruption.
"We (women) must raise to the ocassion and take over leadership for the good of our country amd Kenyans," she added.
The Kitui governor vowed to advocate for women empowerment in matters leadership.
Ngilu is among experienced and veteran female politicians in the country.
In 1997, Ngilu went into histroy books as the first woman to contest for presidential election in Kenya.
In the 2017 general election, Ngilu was among three female politicians who won governor seats.
Others were Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) and Joyce Laboso (Bomet).
Ngilu is expected to defend her gubernatorial seat in the forthcoming 2022 general election.
