Garissa county government has issued a stern warning to poachers even as it seeks to conserve wildlife in a bid to promote local tourism.
Speaking during the World Giraffe Day commemorations held at the Garissa Giraffe Sanctuary at Bour Algi, County Executive Committee member for Trade, Tourism and Enterprise Development Adow Kalil Jubat said the local government shall enact stringent regulations that criminalize poaching.
"We shall undertake a series of community engagement to deliberate on way forward and listen to the concern of the people," Jubat noted in a Facebook post by Garissa County Government Press Unit.
The sentiments were also reiterated by County Assembly chairperson for Wildlife, Environment, Energy and National Resources committee Abdirahman Billow who assured of support in protecting the endangered wildlife species within the county.
Billow further lauded the efforts by governor Ali Korane in supporting domestic tourism, a move he says will generate more revenue to the county.
At the moment, Garissa County prides itself on being home of the endangered white giraffe, which is reported to be the only one of its breed in the whole world.
The albino Giraffe is only found at the Ishaqbini Hirola Sanctuary, situated in Ijara sub-county of Garissa county.
