The revelations have been made by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) after publishing the cost of Mombasa’s Dongo Kundu Bypass.

This means the highway was built at Sh2.7 billion per kilometer – a figure likely to cause a storm among economists and those who understand the nitty-gritty of roadwork construction.

Already there have been concerns that government tenders are inflated hence milking the public coffers.

The nine-kilometre section between Mwache and Mteza becomes the expensive road to have ever been built per kilometer.

KeNHA, however, says two bridges erected on the phase had made the road that expensive.
