Last year, Kisumu County witnessed political shake-ups in its wards and constituencies as a host of new leaders were voted into office.
Fred Odhiambo Ouda was elected the second Kisumu Central Member of Parliament (MP) after defeating key political figures among them former MP Ken Obura, former Kisumu mayor Sam Okello, and Kisumu County Assembly Speaker George Onyango Oloo.
The former Member of the County Assembly (MCA) came into office on the backdrop of controversial stunts among them chaining himself on the gates of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He was seen as a firm supporter of ODM party leader Raila Odinga, compared to his predecessor Obura who had been branded a Jubilee mole due to his close working relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
Slightly more than one year after being elected, a section of residents in Kisumu Central now believe that they made a wrong call tossing Obura out of office and replacing him with Ouda.
They accuse him of not being ‘visible’ on the ground, and not showing any signs of matching Obura’s development record.
His supporters, however, insist that the MP is doing a great job, especially in the education sector where he continues to sponsor needy students through school.
But the current MP seems most likely to lose his seat unless he urgently puts measures to match Obura’s record.
