Cases of teenage pregnancies in Nairobi's slum areas have rapidly increased in recent times and this has led to an increase in school drop out cases.
Here are some reasons for the rapid rise in teenage pregnancies.
1. Poverty
Kibera families are said to be among the lowest average income units in the county. It is thus difficult to provide for their teenagers. This situation makes teenagers to look for an alternative way of getting money so as to meet their needs. They end up engaging in irresponsible sexual behaviour for money.
2. Parents failing to take responsibility
Most parents find it difficult to talk sex-related issues with their teenagers. This makes them try out some things due to lack of knowledge thus leading to early pregnancies.
3. Experimentation
Most of these teenagers have access to social media platforms where they see, read, watch and listen to a lot of pictures, literature and videos respectively. They get a lot from them and try to experiment some of what they get thus leading them to irresponsible sexual behaviour.
