Eleven years ago, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua made some unpleasant comments about former United States (US) President Barrack Obama.

Mutua then was Kenya's government's spokesman while Obama a Senator in the US.

Mutua failed to mince his words and called Obama an unintelligent and immature senator from Illinois.

This is after Obama gave a lecture at the University of Nairobi where he criticized the government of Kenya for failing to fight graft.

"It's very clear that he was speaking out of ignorance and he doesn't understand the Kenyan politics. We had thought he is mature in his assessment of Kenyan and African politics but we do forgive him because we understand it's his first time in the Senate and he's yet to understand the issues of foreign policy," Mutua said.

"He's being used as a puppet to perpetuate opposition politics which is very shocking because he's supposed to be intelligent," he added.

As it seemed Mutua didn't imagine that the man he called immature and unintelligent would lead the United States for two terms.

When Obama visited Kenya in 2015, Mutua seemed humbled and wanted to be associated with him, an indication that he regretted his 'past' utterances.

Mutua made sure he engaged Obama for a few more seconds than other leaders.

However, the governor is on the spot once more for disrespecting Machakos Speaker Florence Mwangangi by calling him 'Kaveti'.

Leaders from Machakos have shot at him for his lack of respect for other leaders, more so, women.

So, the question remains, did Mutua really learn from his past mistakes?
