Kalonzo asked Wiper MPs to support the proposal by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a statement circulated to newsrooms on Wednesday, Kalonzo stated that the president was lenient enough to reduce the tax from 16 to 8 percent since the country still needs to be developed.

"The tax can be reduced to 0% but the country will be on its knees, we have to strike a balance between fulfilling our people's needs and achieving the country's development agenda," the statement reads in part.

Kalonzo trashed claims that the opposition had lost its teeth after the handshake.

He urged the government to intensify the fight against graft to ensure taxpayers' money doesn't get lost in the pockets of few greedy individuals.

"The government must more than ever re-energize its fight against corrupt individuals and cartels to safeguard taxpayers' money," Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo made these remarks after a section of lawmakers from Ukambani region urged the government to reduce the tax on fuel to zero percent so as to relieve 'mwananchi' of the heavy burden.
