A total of 1,468 students from Matuga and Msambweni Sub-counties have benefited from Ksh11,395,000 million bursary for colleges, secondary and driving schools.
Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani distributed the cheques to the beneficiaries and their parents at Tiwi Sokoni and Ramisi areas respectively.
At Tiwi Sokoni, Governor Mvurya distributed cheques worth Ksh5.06 million to 25 county secondary school students and 411 others under the Kenya University and College Placement Programme (KUCCPP).
At Ramisi, Achani distributed cheques worth Ksh6,335,199 to 1,057 students - 34 students to national schools got Ksh1,764,270, Ksh1,791 went to university and college students, Ksh381,199 to county school students, Ksh2,952,000 to 733 other schools students and Ksh1,211,000 to driving school students.
Speaking at Tiwi Sokoni, Governor Mvurya opposed the proposed merger of counties saying this will take the country back to the centralized system of government.
This would see Kwale County merged with Mombasa and Taita Taveta counties.
"I as Kwale Governor oppose strongly any kind of county merger where it is proposed that we be merged with Mombasa and Taita Taveta counties. This is retrogressive as devolution came to enable citizens make their own decisions," he said on Tuesday.
A total of 3,800 students in national schools and other 2,000 in universities are receiving full county bursaries for four years.
Other 40,000 in county and extra-county schools also receive bursaries under the Elimu ni Sasa Initiative.
