A section of leaders from Rift Valley have given President Uhuru Kenyatta's government until Monday to pay maize farmers Sh3.5 billion debt.
Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills), Silas Tiren (Moiben), Joshua Kandie (Baringo Central) and Sammy Seroney (nominated) said the government should pay by Monday or meet them in streets.
“If by Monday the government will not have released the farmers’ dues, we will organize the mother of demonstrations in major towns in maize growing zones,” Mr Keter said.
“We want to stand with the farmers and we will bring them to the streets of Kitale, Moi’s Bridge, Eldoret, Kapsabet, Nandi Hills, Nakuru and all other maize growing areas,” he said.
At Eldoret last week, Mr. Tiren mobilised farmers from the region to air their frustrations to Senate team that had visited.
Mr. Tiren, a vocal critic of DP William Ruto, has faulted Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich of orchastrated the debacles.
"He is the one orchastrating this. We know his dirty tricks but he won't survive this time," he warned.
But Mr. Rotich, in a statement, said that Treasury will clear farmers by the end of October, a claim that was corroborated by his Agriculture counterpart Mwangi Kiunjuri.
In a stormy Senate session last week, farmers accused DP Ruto's allies of illegally benefiting from NCPB by importing maize to the country.
