Two MPs from Marsabit County have been released by a Nairobi Court after they were arraigned over allegations of fueling clashes in Marsabit County leading to the deaths of at least 14 people.
North Horr MP Chachu Ganya and his Saku counterpart Ali Rasso were arraigned in court to answer to charges of incitement to violence.
The prosecution however asked the court to grant them 14 more days to complete their investigations in the matter.
The court further heard from the prosecution that they were yet to receive communication from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) showing the extent of the investigations.
Principal Magistrate Bernard Nzakyo, however, dismissed the application by the prosecution saying the four months granted since last year was enough time for the prosecution to carry out the investigation and prefer charges against the two MPs.
Magistrate Nzakyo discharged the two legislators after the prosecution failed to prefer charges against them.
The two MPs were arrested in October last year over allegations of inciting violence in Marsabit but the court ruled that MPs were involved in peace and reconciliation process.
Last year, during the court hearing, the court noted that Mr Chacha and Mr Rasso had already began reconciliation plans to end the violence in Marsabit and that the court wanted the process to continue.
While freeing the legislators on Thursday, Magistrate Nzakyo directed that the cash bail of Sh250,000 which the MPs had deposited in court to secure their freedom, be returned to them.
