Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has recently shown his will and urge to transform Nairobi City into another level.
Last week, he was busy overseeing the demolition of buildings around the city built on the riparian or public land.
However, his push for a better city has been hurdled by five groups of people namely:
1. Cartels
The city is full of cartels always scheming on every move Sonko makes.
Even as Sonko is working on reclaiming the public lands from cartels, he has been threatened and numerous court orders issued to stop reclamation and demolition.
2. Matatu operators
Traffic jam in the city is a menace. Matatu drivers and touts have turned the city into a matatu stage and parking lot.
Their unruly behaviour has denied the city space as they park their vehicles anyhow along streets and major roads. They pick and drop passengers in the middle of the city causing jams. Sonko has hinted on restricting access into the city by these vehicles.
3. Small scale traders
Small scale traders include kiosks owners, food and fruit vendors, stall owners and even mtumba sellers. As Sonko is fighting for the beautification of the city, these people are always throwing litter all over the city piling garbage anyhow.
More so, most of these small-scale traders hide from paying their levies which has denied the county government millions in revenue.
4. Corrupt officials
Corruption has always been a major setback to development. Unfortunately for Sonko, his county government officials are what can be called “money-monsters.”
They love receiving bribes to let mistake doers and offenders walk free. They also receive "a small token" to give fake permits for business owners. This has always denied the county millions in revenue.
5. Hawkers
Hawkers in the city cause confusion and chaos most of the times. They are always all over the streets selling assorted wares.
Their frequent fights with city askaris is something that will bring the city’s development behind. They are always chased from the city, but the next day they will be all over again.
This is a funny lot giving Sonko a nightmare in his bid to transform the city.
