Furious members of Nyamira County Assembly on Thursday forced Governor John Nyagarama into a crisis meeting over the recent interdictions and suspensions of over 1,000 workers.
In April, Governor Nyagarama established a committee to audit the county's payroll following complaints of escalating wage bill that has hit Sh5 billion annually.
In the report, over 1,000 people were affected, forcing the county to freeze their April salaries for further inquiries. Governor Nyagarama vowed to kick them out.
"There is no turning back. We cannot continue paying people who were fraudulently employed. We are ready to face them in court," he told the press a fortnight ago.
On Thursday, angry MCAs stormed the Human Resource office forcing workers to scamper for safety. They demanded to know why some people were removed from the payroll.
Afterwards, Speaker Moffat Teya led a delegation of the MCAs to Governor John Nyagarama's office for a crisis meeting. While the agenda was about the lay off of workers, Teya, however, insisted that they had gone to discuss the plight of ECDE teachers whose contracts had expired.
"We never discussed the issue of payroll purge. We had taken the plight of ECDE teachers to the governor and you know he can't be summoned. I am not aware that MCAs stormed HR offices," he said.
However, nominated MCA George Mosiori confirmed that the issue of 1,000 employees who were struck out of the payroll also surfaced in the meeting.
"Top among the agenda was the 1,000 workers. We want the law to be applied fairly. These people have families and they must be treated well," he said.
