But since the country is busy preparing for Mashujaa Day on 20th, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has said, the ministry will not give directives on how the holiday will be celebrated.

A Kenyan had moved to High Court last year to compel the ministry to reinstate the holiday, an application which was granted by the court.

"The Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government has noted the increased public debate on whether or not October 10 is a public holiday....Going by this (High Court) decision therefore, 10th of October shall be a public holiday," said Matiang'i in the press statement.

He added: "Owing to the elaborate celebrations lined up for all our heroes on Mashujaa Day, I make no pronouncement on the manner in which 10th of October shall be celebrated."

Initially, the holiday was called Moi Day to commemorate when the second President of Kenya Daniel Moi took over power.

However, since he left power in 2002, the new regime under Mwai Kibaki gave it a wide berth before being reinstated last year.

The former Head of State celebrated his 94th birthday recently but has kept a low profile at his Kabarak home.
