Efforts to have Nakuru become a city have suffered after reports that construction of Itare dam in Kuresoi has stalled.
Water supply has been one of the factors to be considered as the town awaits the city status.
Many areas of the county have been experiencing water problems.
Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui, in a statement on Sunday, said they were disappointed by the turn of events.
“The County Government of Nakuru is greatly disappointed by the recent developments concerning the Itare dam project. The hopes of water supply for Nakuru town, Molo, Njoro town, Elburgon, Rongai and parts of Kuresoi were pegged on the dam. Stalling of the project is, therefore, a matter of grave concern to the residents as it means they will continue to experience water shortage,” Kinyanjui said.
The governor spoke after reports emerged that the project has stalled and an Italian contractor who was in charge has pulled out.
“We have written to the Ministry of Water seeking a speedy resolution to this impasse,” Kinyanjui added.
The county boss has also asked the national government to address the terms and conditions of the contract.
“Owing to the bankruptcy of the company contracted to build the dam, it is unlikely the project will continue without addressing the contractual obligations under bankruptcy provisions. We, however, hope that suitable sub- contractors will be found, and the project will resume in the shortest time possible,” the county boss said.
It will be a tall order for the county to be elevated into a city without a water source that can give a steady supply of water to residents.
