Losing a job or even getting a job is not easy. When one has lost a job or their seeking one they normally go through a lot of emotional and mental torture. When one is going through this phase they become so delicate. Here are some of the things you should avoid saying when dealing with such a person.
1. Your area of specialization is congested
so it was expected-it happens in many fields at times business is good other times it is bad. You should never say this to a person who has just lost their job it does not help cheer them up. Try to encourage them that no matter how hard it is to hack in their area of specialization it is an achievement they even got a job in the first place.
2. I am having troubles at my workplace too
"How I wish I was in your position” - telling someone who has just lost their job how your own job sucks won’t help them in any way. You are still in that job anyway no matter how much you despise your boss but they have lost theirs.
3. Has the search yielded any fruits
What they hear when you ask them is “are you still unemployed”. Quit asking them if their job hunt has been successful if it was you would have known . Encourage them that great opportunity will come their way soon. Remind them that you know it’s not easy trying to get the job and say good things.
4. How about you use this as an excuse to have a vacation
Vacation you say? How do you even tell an unemployed person to take a vacation? How do they even relax? Unemployed people don’t sit on their couches all day watching movies. They are busy creating networks, writing cover letters and updating their resumes.
