President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga held secret talks for close to three days in United Arab Emirates, it has now emerged.
The two arrived in Dubai on Saturday after their official trip to China that lasted for four days. President Uhuru cancelled a trip to Riyadh with State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita saying the journey did not materialise.
“Half of those the President was going to engage are preparing for Ramadhan. We will, therefore, reschedule the visit,” stated Waita.
But since Saturday, the two leaders are said to have held a series of meetings with their handlers kept at bay. It is not clear what they discussed for three days.
On Tuesday, Raila and Uhuru arrived in the country separately. Mr Odinga was the first to land at JKIA before Uhuru. He was ushered in by National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi and a couple of MPs.
“We don’t know what they were discussing, but they met many times,” said an official.
Early this month, Uhuru lashed at a section of Jubilee leaders who have been questioning his ties with Mr Odinga. The President insisted that his working relationship with Odinga would not be sabotaged by anyone.
“We have just been talking about issues affecting our people. If its infrastructure, what do we need to do? We discuss and we support each other,” the President said when he officially closed the inaugural AfroChampions Boma forum on African infrastructure financing and delivery at Windsor Hotel two weeks ago.
He added; “We sit; we discuss; we agree. He (Raila) also gives me ideas that enhance something and make it even better. What is wrong with that?”
Deputy President William Ruto has been uneasy with the two leaders ever since they decided to work together. In many occasions, Ruto has accused Mr Odinga of fueling hatred between him and the president.
