Many of us who were privileged to be under Moi’s regime remember the famous Nyayo Milk; which was freely distributed to primary schools.
The Nyayo Milk was meant to accomplish three major objectives; boost nutrition among primary school learners, boost school attendance especially in ASAL areas especially among pastoral communities and support the government-owned KCC which was a major dairy processing company.
The current government can borrow a leaf and implement a free meat program; albeit with greater financial discipline which synonymous with Kibaki’s administration.
The program can be implemented under the pillar of food security, to boost the struggling KMC (Kenya Meat Commission) which is facing stiff competition from private slaughterhouses.
Biologists suggest that meat is a crucial component in the growth of brain cells, which translates to better brain power.
This is why purported health campaigns against the consumption of meat should be abolished in Kenya; let us enjoy our favourite Nyama choma or boiled or Mutura, then reduce our average lifespan by 10 years but be 5 times more productive!
Introducing a meat-free program can work well to salvage lose of animals especially during dry seasons when many animals from pastoralist communities die due to lack of grass and water.
It will also serve as a diet supplement to the people who can't afford meat or alternative protein providing meals.
