With three years to the 2022 general election, the political momentum ahead of that poll has already been set with ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto touted as the most likely bitter opponents in the presidential race.
Whereas Raila has not publicly declared his intention to run for the seat which has eluded him in four occasions, the DP has made it clear that he will go for the country's top seat.
So, should Raila make another stab at the presidency come the next poll, where should he begin? There is no doubt that the former Prime Minister's first move is to water down the growing influence of Garissa Township MP Aden Duale.
As one of the most influential politicians in the country today, Duale who is a key Ruto ally mastered the game under Raila duelling their days in ODM.
Since then, the National Assembly majority leader has become literally unbeatable in politics, with the DP becoming the main beneficiary of his growing political muscle.
If the recent two general elections are anything to go by, then Raila has a mountain to climb in its bid to swing back the North Eastern region into the ODM political formation.
With Duale as Ruto's foot soldier in the region, Raila's future there hangs on the balance. And for him to set his footing right, then he will have to neutralize the former Dujis MP politically.
